Emblem: Squirrel

Many emblems came to mind that signified the idea the of quickness as I initially understood it— as a fast paced movement or the quickening of a pace, but on completion of reading Calvino’s Memo on “quickness,” I had a bigger understanding, one that encompassed contradictory concepts. In other words, quickness does not simply amass to a quicken of pace or movement but rather encompasses the aspect of speed, whether fast or slow. And Calvino implements his logo here— “Festina Lente,” meaning “to hurry slowly,” to encompass the idea and combination of both a fast and slow speed as part of the process.

When I chose my emblem of a squirrel I envisioned the squirrel in a constant state of flux, existing in a time medium that is both illusory and realistic, and the confusion that results. It cannot determine when it employ the speed of lightening or when it should slow down to a complete stop, and often it makes several attempts to cross the road before actually reaching its goal. “And so he prefers to keep his convictions in the fluid state, check them instance by instance, and make them the implicit rule of his own everyday behavior, in doing or not doing, in choosing or not choosing or rejecting, in speaking or in remaining silent.” – From Mr. Palomar by Italo Calvino.

Quickness & Graphics: Time & Motion

Constant Motion

The graphic element that I liked best to support the characteristics of speed, is the idea of time intervals and types of motion or speed. “Motion is a kind of change, and change takes place in time.” Even a still image has “implied motion.” […] “It can be useful to think about the screen as an active, changing surface as well as a neutral stage or support onto which characters rush on an off.” So any kind of movement implies a change in position, or structure which connects, interacts and reacts accordingly in relationship to a time continuum.
